Being the daughter of a
Unitarian Minister and wife of William Gaskell, the Unitarian Minister of Cross
Street Chapel in Manchester, the underlying principles by which Elizabeth
analysed individual character and society were religious.
Using as primary sources her NOVELS, SHORT-STORIES, and LIFE OF CHARLOTTE
BRONTE, the role of religion in the nineteenth century will be examined in the
appropriate ESSAYS and BIOGRAPHIES.
